'Person Of Interest' In FAMU Shooting Threat Detained In South Florida
A man has been detained in South Florida and identified as a “person of interest” in shooting threats against Florida A&M University. The person has not been identified.
UPDATE 5:10 p.m.: The Tallahassee police department says the person detained for an alleged threat against Florida A&M University was a former student, and had not had any ties to Tallahassee in over a year.
Reports of the threat began circulating on social media Monday night. Students began sharing screenshots of a social media profile that include guns and shooting threats. It was unclear whether any of those posts mention FAMU directly.
FAMU sent an email to students at 7: 41 a.m.
“We would like to thank our Florida A&M University family for their countless text messages, phone calls and emails in regards to a threat made against the University.
Classes will be held as scheduled today".
The information helped identify a person of interest, a former student, who was last enrolled at FAMU in January 2018. The person is unnamed. He was placed in protective custody in Broward. There was no immediate threat to FAMU and an investigation is ongoing.
