Volunteers Build Bunks for Bedless Kids

Tom Flanigan

Dozens of volunteers were building bunk beds on Saturday, Dec. 15 for area kids who don't have beds to sleep in. About fifty people turned the parking lot of the Leon County Court Annex on Thomasville Road into a woodworking production line.

The group leading the project was the Sleep in Heavenly Peace local chapter, headed by John Cousins.

"We're actually going to build 12 bunk beds today," he explained."So we're going to have 24 kids off the floor."

State Guardian Ad Litem head Alan Abramowitz had his people helping out, some of whom brought their children.

"You see kids building beds," he observed. "They're learning the values that we need in Florida; to volunteer and to help other people."

One of the volunteer kids was Mason Stafford. "I did sanding, I also did drilling and tapping and I also did the saw," he recounted proudly.

And then there was Justin Bowie from the FSU Dean of Students office.

"I was just happy to help in this beautiful weather, now that it's not raining," he smiled.

Next year, Sleep in Heavenly Peace is planning to build 250 bunk beds for local children.
