Weekend Showers Don't Deter Market Day Shoppers

Tom Flanigan

Tallahassee's Winter Festival may have been partially rained out over the weekend, but intrepid shoppers braved the weather to take part in the yearly Market Days at the North Florida Fairgrounds.

The sporadic bands of heavy rain put only a slight damper on the shoppers' enthusiasm. It was Market Days' 53rd year to benefit the Tallahassee Museum. Museum Executive Director Russell Daws was frankly happy to see anyone show up.

"Yeah, our numbers are down a little bit," he noted, "But I would have never expected thuis many people here and the Early Bird shopping was filled up."

Most of the more than three-hundred vendors seemed pleased. Like Ocala wood turner Kent Weakley, a first-time Market Days exhibitor.

"Fortunately, the people who have been buying from me, you can tell; they share my enthusiasm for wood and they get excited about it, so it's nice to see them going to good homes," he remarked, referring to his elegantly crafted bowls and other vessels carved from various kinds of wood harvested from hurricane debris over the years.
