The rail line that connects Tallahassee to Jacksonville and Pensacola has been for sale since January.
Now the Florida-based holding company RailUSA has announced it’s buying the nearly 400 mile long stretch of track from CSX Transportation and naming it the Florida Gulf and Atlantic Railroad. Tallahassee Mayor Pro-Tem Curtis Richardson called it good news.
“...to know that Florida Gulf and Atlantic has acquired the CSX tracks and property and we can look forward to rail service in our area," he said. "And it will be headquartered here in Tallahassee, creating jobs and being a community partner.”
Initially, the new railroad is hiring just over three-dozen people, including engineers, conductors, yardmasters, track maintenance people and a superintendent. Operations are expected to begin after the first of the year.
