A memorial service for the victims of the Oct. 27th synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh was held at Tallahassee’s Temple Israel the evening of Monday, Oct. 39. Hundreds of people from all backgrounds and faith traditions packed the Temple’s sanctuary.

Temple Israel Rabbi Jack Romberg said he had expected a fairly large number of people to show up. But even he was a bit awestruck by the actual turnout.

"I have to admit that I had no idea...I had NO idea that this city would respond this way," he marveled as the large audience burst into spontaneous applause.

There were prayers and songs in Hebrew and English. There were also several speakers, including Christian pastors, an Islamic scholar a conservative rabbi and Florida State University President John Thrasher. All expressing messages similar to the one voiced by Temple President Shannon Novey.

"It is my fervent hope that together we will reject the politics of hate and build for our families and this community a better world," she said, welcoming the participants.
