The longest-serving member of the Leon County School Board is facing a challenge from well-known political insider. Leon County’s Darryl Jones is jumping into the race.
Jones works for the joint city-county office of economic vitality and he announced his bid for school board Tuesday on facebook, followed by a press release. He’s joining Charles Williams and Donna Hayes-Austin in the race.
"I've always been passionate about serving my community and its members. If given the chance to serve the people of Leon County's District 3, I will do so with the future and well-being of our children in mind. There's no other community more deserving of our efforts," Jones said in a statement.
He's a Florida A&M University graduate who has also served on numerous community boards, such as the PACE Center for Girls, the Children’s Campaign, the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital Foundation, the Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce and the Big Bend Minority Chamber of Commerce.
There are three school board positions up for election this cycle. In addition to Maggie Lewis Butler’s seat, there are also districts one and five, where School Board chairwoman Alva Striplin and Joy Bowen face challengers.
