Tallahassee’s bus system will offer free bus rides on all of its routes this Saturday. In honor of the 62nd anniversary of the Tallahassee Bus Boycott, StarMetro’s free-fare day is a part of a series of local commemoration events held through May 26th.
In 1956, two Florida A&M University students sat in the “whites only” section on a Tallahassee bus and refused to move. Following their arrest came a nonviolent protest, which lead to an important win for civil rights in the south. Mayor Pro Tem Curtis Richardson encourages citizens to enjoy the free rides.
“We all feel that we’ve made tremendous progress, but we know that there is still work to be done.”
Florida State University and Florida A&M University will be sponsoring exhibits, a documentary film screening, live entertainment, and a symbolic walk.
