Leon County Schools says a handful of middle school students participated in a national school walkout Wednesday, this time in support of the Second Amendment. The district treated the walkout in the same manner as those held last week to call for more stringent gun laws.
About four Montford Middle students wearing red, ‘Stand Up for the Second Amendment’ t-shirts walked out of class at 10 this morning, and several others joined them on their way to the school’s football field. The event was part of a Nationally-coordinated effort in which schools registered on the website, StandForTheSecond.com. District spokesman Chris Petley says Montford Middle was registered by someone who does not work at the school.
"That event was registered by an individual, it doesn’t say who it was. So, the school did not register that event," Petley said.
Still, Petley says the district followed the same guidelines it did last week, when high school students from several schools walked out in support of stricter gun regulations.
"The students that participated in this event were treated the same as the students that participated in the walkout recognizing the anniversary of Columbine. We want to make sure all of our students are treated equal, regardless of their beliefs," Petley said.
At the school’s request, media was staged at the front of the school for walkout coverage and did not see the student participants.
