Hanna: More Than 50,000 LCS Teachers, Students' Social Security Numbers Compromised By Data Breach

Leon Schools Superintendent Rocky Hanna says more than 50,000 of the county’s current and former teachers and students have had sensitive information compromised.

In 2013, the district sent data including social security numbers to a learning management system company. That company was later purchased by Florida Virtual School, which Hanna said left a server “wide open” to hackers.

"In my opinion, the personal teacher and student information that Leon County Schools sent to UCompass in 2013, never should have been shared with anyone, period," Hanna said. "It was simply poor judgment by former district leadership."

Hanna said the district is now working with a mass mailing company to send out letters to those affected. The breach was first reported in Politico Florida.
