Florida’s Cabinet has approved a proposal to conserve 772 acres in Madison County. The land is in the Sampala Lake Ranch.

Florida Forest Service director Jim Karels says it has historical importance.

“The property is significant as a historical site as well. The site of the San Pedro A. Sampala Mission on Lake Sampala. One of the five missions established by the Spanish in the 1600s,” Karels says.

The State is spending $660,600 to purchase a conservation easement on the property.
