The Leon County Board of Commissioners will get an update Tuesday on the collection of Tourist Development Taxes.
The agreement between the county and AirBnB aims to level the playing field between property owners and traditional hotels. Deputy County Attorney Patrick Kinni gave commissioners an overview of the plan during an earlier meeting.
“We are estimating at about 46,000 on this first go round but I think it’s likely to increase over a period of time. And so we are now, I don’t want to use the word capturing but I’m going to say capturing a niche of tourist tax dollars that we weren’t getting before,”says Attorney Kinni.
Commissioners are now looking for opportunities to strike similar deals with other short term booking sites. The money is expected to go toward improving tourism in the county.
