County officials say storm debris pick up will start this week and continue until the job is done. Mathieu Cavell is the spokesman for Leon County.
"We’ll definitely get it out of the community. We can’t chip it all and keep the mulch here. But we’ll pick it up, chip it down and ship it out if we can," Cavell says.
There are a few guidelines to follow when putting debris out. County officials ask that all debris be placed between the sidewalk and curb and that yard waste be kept separate from construction materials and other large items such as appliances.
Several rural waste site service centers will also be waiving fees through Sunday for anyone wishing to drop off debris.
“Those are positioned throughout the community and are opened Friday, Saturday and Sunday and our solid waste management facility where you can bring any loads is open Monday through Saturday. So again, all fees have been waived for that following Irma,” Cavell says.
Cavell says most of the yard material collected will be chipped. Some will be used for mulch and some for fuel.
