Through FWC Grant, Franklin Residents Have Chance To Make Regular Trash Cans Bear Proof

Franklin County residents have at least two opportunities to make their regular trash cans bear-proof, thanks to a grant. Florida wildlife officials are looking to add hardware to help reduce human-bear conflicts in the area.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is working with local governments across the state to provide bear resistant trash cans to residents in areas where bears like to feed from unsecured residential garbage.

But, in Franklin County, they’re allowing residents to bring in their regular trash cans, so officials can install hardware to make the cans bear resistant.

On August 12, volunteers will be at the Carabelle Volunteer Fire Department to add the hardware. A similar event will occur August 26 at Vrooman Park in Eastpoint. For more information, MyFWC.com/Bear.
