Tallahassee's Frenchtown Market is growing into much more than just a place to buy locally-sourced produce. Tom Flanigan reports the twice-weekly bazaar is also hosting special events and classes.
On Saturday (July 22), Courtney Schoen, TAPP Coordinator for the City of Tallahassee, was showing market visitors how to create rain barrels from cast-off commercial containers.
"A lot of gardeners just appreciate having that soft water for their gardens and if it doesn't rain for a week your plants are wilting so you might be happy to have a whole supply here," she explained.
On hand to decorate the barrels was the Sharing Tree's Carly Sinnadurai.
"We got a New Leaf grant for the year to do a living classroom so we're been beautifying the garden space and hosting workshops out there," while showing off a former 55-gallon metal drum that now sported a stylized wave motif in various shades of blue.
Meanwhile the market's Assistant Manager Alberto de los Rios said another special happening was set for the following Saturday, July 29.
"(It's) Summer Harvest Fest and it will be a great time for everybody and there will be barbecues, vegan chefs and conventional chefs and something for everyone to do," he said.
That, of course, in addition to shoppers picking up fresh produce, handcrafts and other locally sourced goodies.
