Citizens To Review Redevelopment Proposal For Old Shelter Site

A plan to redevelop the site of the old shelter on Tennessee Street will get a hearing tonight. The proposal could transform an entire city block that has struggled for years.

Earlier this year the City of Tallahassee demolished the old homeless shelter, after building a new center on Pensacola Street. Now a team led by the Reverend R. B. Holmes of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church wants to transform the empty lot and the surrounding city block. The sweeping plan imagines a vibrant neighborhood with a grocery store, bank and urgent care center. Solar panels would top townhouses. And residents could enjoy the view from a pedestrian bridge stretching across Tennessee Street. A citizens’ advisory committee will hear from the group tonight at 6 at the Renaissance Center. The team hopes to win an exclusive redevelopment agreement with the city later this month.
