Every spring break, hundreds of students from FSU, FAMU and TCC take part in a charitable exercise called "The Big Event". This year's Big Event happened at Second Harvest of the Big Bend.
Volunteer Leon Director Jeri Bush greeted the students Saturday morning at this year's work site.
"And good morning, everybody, on behalf of Leon County welcome to Second Harvest," Bush said to the large group of volunteers.
Among the crowd, FSU Elementary Education Major Sara Stump.
"Some of my friends in my classes told me about it. This is my third year of living in Tallahassee. I hadn't really the opportunity to get out there, so I thought this would be a great way to give back," she said.
That sentiment was echoed by her Education Department colleague, Cassandra Barthoni.
"When I first heard about Big Event it was during freshman year, but I never had the chance to participate and give back. So junior year I told myself I'm going to participate this year."
The dozens of Big Event volunteers assembled food packs for needy households and even sampled a typical low-income family meal to understand how what they were doing would make a difference.
