"Shelter" Comes Tumbling Down: Site Future Uncertain

Tom Flanigan

The future of the site is still unknown, but the former Shelter site in downtown Tallahassee is rapidly turning into a vacant lot. Now the fate of the location will depend on the findings of a study being prepared for the Community Redevelopment Agency.

The last truckloads of what was the Shelter were being hauled away on Wednesday. Soon, the 3-acre property at the corner of Macomb and Tennessee streets will be ready for new construction. Leon County Commissioner Nick Maddox who chairs the Community Redevelopment Agency, hoped whatever it is will be a worthy addition to the downtown landscape.

“I’m excited about the opportunities that will present itself once we get the Shelter down and how it’s going to create a proper entry into the history Frenchtown area.”

Two years ago, the leadership of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, which has redeveloped several Frenchtown area properties, approached the CRA about the Shelter block. Maddox says that plan hasn’t been ruled out. Still, the final disposition of the property may depend on the findings of a feasibility study being prepared for the CRA on the best potential uses for the land.
