Leon County's Fifth Sustainable Communities Summit happened Saturday at the FSU Turnbull Center.
This year's theme was ways to enjoy the area's many outdoor assets. About 200 hundred people braved the early-morning showers to hear presenters like Tommy Thompson, who talked about kayaking, saying, "I think that the kayak is such a beautiful tool in North Florida to explore our almost endless natural resources."
Alexandra Boswell from the Leon County Extension Office explained there are very few wild creatures that pose any real threat to people.
"Educate yourself on what is outside and you give yourself the tools you need to succeed and you should be okay," she explained.
County Office of Resource Stewardship Director Maggie Theriot was happy with the turnout.
"Community members are joining us today for lots of learning and fun and hopefully we'll be in the outdoors after lunch."
That hope was fulfilled as the rain ended around midday and the program moved outside.
