The 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks was marked by solemn ceremony in Florida's Capital City. The observance at the Centre of Tallahassee began precisely at 8:45 Sunday morning.
That was the moment the first of two planes crashed into New York's World Trade Center. In helping recount the events of that morning, Leon County Sheriff Mike Wood noted there were many survivors.
"The vast majority of the people below the impact zone were safely evacuated from the buildings, along with 18 individuals who were actually in the impact zone in the South Tower, due in large part to the heroism of our brave responders; firefighters, police and emergency workers," he said during his part of the narrative, which involved the community's first responders and elected officials.
And Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum took the occasion to thank those who helped the Capital City cope with a more recent disaster.
"Following the events of this past week I want you to know that you all serve a very, very grateful community," he said, referring to Hurricane Hermine.
The ceremony concluded with the placing of flowers on a section of steel beam salvaged from the World Trade Center.
