Capital City Democrats Have a Picnic

Tom Flanigan

Leon County Democrats held their Sixteenth Annual Picnic Saturday (7/16) at Tallahassee's Lake Ella American Legion. That brought a record number of political candidates and their supporters made for a very crowded event.

Tallahassee's own Star Swain kicked off the happening with her now world-famous rendition of the National Anthem. Then it was time for some old-fashioned political speeches. The speakers were introduced by one of the very few local office holders not facing an election this year, City Commissioner Gil Ziffer.

"And we've got a lot of Democrats running here today and they're going to come up and tell you why they should be elected," he told the enthusiastic standing-room-only crowd. "But there's one thing for sure; we're going to fill every seat that's available with a Democrat!"

But there are also plenty of Republicans running this go-around. There are GOP contenders in virtually every partisan race, including Congress, State House and Senate, Sheriff and State Attorney.
