A conceptual design for the proposed Debbie Lightsey Nature Park is now under review by the Blueprint 2000 Intergovernmental Agency.

Tallahassee is already home to dozens of parks scattered around the city, but the land near Capital Circle Southwest has a unique character. It’s nearly 85 percent water. Blueprint Planning Manager Autumn Calder says they hope to protect the habitat’s wildlife by creating a passive-activity park.

“The parcel was actually bought by Blueprint in 2006 for the purposes of wetland mitigation for the roadway impacts that we were having to the wetlands in the Capital Circle Corridor that’s adjacent to the park,” says Calder.

In addition to mountain biking and ADA accessible boardwalks, Calder says the park would feature educational signs about the area’s distinctive topography. The project proposals will go before the Tallahassee City Commission on June 20th. The park is named for former city commissioner Debbie Lightsey.
