Well-known Leon Countians were delivering Meals on Wheels this (4/19/16) morning.
The celebrity volunteers included local elected officials and media personalities. There were also a few high-ranking state officials, like Florida Department of Elder Affairs Secretary Sam Verghese.
“Really we have this big vision as a state that we want to see all Floridians aging with dignity and with purpose and with independence and this is such a huge way that that’s being accomplished,” Verghese told the group of volunteers after they assembled at Elder Care Services on West Tennessee Street.
Melanie Lee is a weekly Meals on Wheels volunteer, and her face is among the best known in the area. As her dealership’s general manager, she appears on TV ads for Kia Autosport telling viewers she “wants to see ya in a Kia.”
“They really enjoy seeing me and I enjoy seeing them. They make my week,” she said of the seniors she encounters during her deliveries.
All of this is a big help for Elder Care Services, which is directed by Mark Baldino.
“It’s a feel-good event to go out and brighten someone’s day, everybody loves it,” he said.
About two dozen area luminaries helped with Tuesday’s Meals on Wheels deliveries.
