Leon County Unveils Okeeheepkee Prairie Park

Kate Payne

Leon County is debuting Okeeheepkee Prairie Park, a new public green space in West Tallahassee.

Okeeheepkee means disappearing waters, the Native American name given to nearby Lake Jackson. The park consists of 26 acres of open prairie, native wildlife and an ADA accessible trail. Designer John Sliger says the park layout supports the local ecosystem.

“Not only is this pond serving as a protection for Lake Jackson, increasing the water quality, but also we’ve increased the habitat for our feathered friends and some of furry friends as well,” he said.

Park planners worked with the regional Water Management District to preserve and protect existing habitats. The park is located on Fuller Road, north of the I-10/ Monroe Street Intersection.
