Leon County's newest "Girls on the Run" class held its graduation exercises on Saturday. It was literal exercise as the girls and their fans ran a 5K race.
More than 300 people either ran or cheered as each graduate came across the finish line at Premier Health and Fitness. Among the graduates, DeSoto Trail Fifth Grader Steffie Harris who says the program taught her a lot more than just how to run better.
“Well you can learn to work together, so there’s teamwork,” she said shortly after finishing the course. “And to be confident in yourself and not be somebody else.”
Among the many volunteers helping out, Tallahassee First Lady R. Jai Gillum.
“I told them earlier this morning that I can’t wait until these girls are old enough to be coaches, they’ll be coaching my Caroline at one of our local schools,” she said.
Girls on the Run serves third through eighth grade girls in several Leon County schools.
