FL Cabinet Honors Tallahassee Urban Food Advocate

Miaisha Mitchell receiving her award.
Florida Office of the Governor

The Florida Cabinet is recognizing a Tallahassee advocate for urban agriculture.

Tallahassee’s Miaisha Mitchell has been the driving force behind local organizations bent on improving access to fresh foods.  Tuesday the Florida Cabinet awarded Mitchell its Champion of Service award for her efforts with the Tallahassee Food Network.  Volunteer Florida CEO Chester Spellman explains her impact in the local community.

“She has helped to install two workplace gardens, four church gardens, four school gardens and five community gardens,” Spellman says.  “She has also developed a local urban youth agricultural program called iGrow.”

iGrow operates two urban farms in Tallahassee.  One in Frenchtown and the other in South City.

Nick Evans came to Tallahassee to pursue a masters in communications at Florida State University. He graduated in 2014, but not before picking up an internship at WFSU. While he worked on his degree Nick moved from intern, to part-timer, to full-time reporter. Before moving to Tallahassee, Nick lived in and around the San Francisco Bay Area for 15 years. He listens to far too many podcasts and is a die-hard 49ers football fan. When Nick’s not at work he likes to cook, play music and read.
