Leon County Schools Superintendent Jackie Pons is running for a fourth term. He made his formal announcement Tuesday. The former Rickards teacher visited his old job for his announcement.
Pons spoke in front of a crowd of supporters at Rickards High School.
“I just felt very strongly that coming back to Rickards High School where I spent my career as a teacher was very important,” Pons says. “And my daughter, just when we sit down and decided to run we talked about it, and she was very encouraging. She thought it was the best thing to do and I trust the people. And I look forward to going in front of them one more time.”
He says his campaign will focus on elementary school safety, new technology in classrooms, anti-bullying and building a new high school.
Pons will have to fend off Tallahassee Commissioner Scott Maddox, former Leon High School principal Rocky Hanna and Michael Wynn, if he wants to keep the job. He will also face questions about an FBI probe into the districts construction funding.
