Citizens have until Friday July 31 to enroll in Valdosta’s Citizens Fire Academy. Those who apply will learn about fire departments in action.
Officials hope the second annual Citizens Fire Academy will establish a community relationship between the Valdosta Fire Department, and those it serves. Fire Marshal Captain James Clinkscales says, classes will show people what it’s like to be a firefighter.
“We’re more than just fighting fires or going to car accidents,” Clinkscales said. “So it’s other activities and other things we do in the community. So, I want them to know that, what other resources may be available to them.”
The nine-week class is free. Graduates of last year’s class have since formed the Citizens Fire Academy Response Team, a citizen’s group to help the Valdosta Fire Department with responsibilities such as checking fire hydrants.
