In an effort to increase healthy living, the Leon County Library is adding a new item to its shelves—seed packets. Anyone with a library card can check them out—and this time, there’s no due date.
Volunteers at the LeRoy Collins Library are packing seeds for people to plant this fall. The project is part of Sustainable Tallahassee, which encourages people to eat local food. Donna Cirenza is the library Operations Manager. This is the library’s second season offering seeds and this time she says they’re adding more.
“We will do a total of a little under 10,000 envelops, which is divided into 11 vegetables,” she says.
Radishes, spinach, collards, kale, cilantro, lettuce, carrots, and arugula are some of the vegetables included.
Cirenza says she’s amazed by the success the seed packing program has had.
“The community came and checked out all the seeds,” she says. “And the seeds last time were checked out within ten days.”
Cirenza is hopeful the program will help people understand how to grow and enjoy their own vegetables. Anyone with a library card is allowed to check out up to three seed packets a month.
