Senator Bullard: Where Is The FAM In U?

Senator Dwight Bullard returned to Florida A&M University Wednesday as the keynote speaker at the school’s annual Black History Month Convocation.  Carrying the theme of “Where is the FAM in U”, Bullard challenged his audience to help preserve the institution. He cited the success of FAMU alumni, like fellow Sen. Athena Joyner and Patricia Stephens Due who were arrested during their efforts to desegregate the Tallahassee bus system.

"So it’s folks like Patricia Stephens Due and my colleague and my leader Sen. Athena Joyner who were arrested to give you the opportunity to sit and go where you want to go. Florida A&M University students did that," Bullard said.

Bullard also shared his struggles while running for senate and spoke about the death of his mother former Sen. Larcenia Bullard who died two years ago.

"But she had seen her son take her seat in the Florida Senate so I know I’ve done proud by her," Bullard shared.

Bullard credits FAMU for preparing him for the current leadership role—he heads the Legislative Black Caucus.

"Not only do I encourage you to continue to fight for FAMU and embed FAM in you but more importantly for future generations. Thank you," Bullard concluded.
