Some changes may be in store for a busy Tallahassee shopping center.

The Tallahassee-Leon County Planning Commission will discuss the rezoning of Westwood Plaza at Tuesday evening’s public hearing. Located on the corner of West Pensacola Street and Ocala Road, the plaza is home to Gold’s Gym and several other businesses. Tallahassee-Leon Planning Department administrator Russell Snyder says the project is still in a very early stage.

“At this level it’s called a concept plan, so really you’re just dealing with allowable uses, caps on square footage, caps on number of units,” Snyder says. “You don’t see the specific proposal until they come in with the site plan.”

According to Snyder, the shopping center’s owner, Westwood Plaza, L.L.C., applied for the rezoning in April. After the Development Review Committee approved the request, the Planning Commission and City Commission must also agree before plans can proceed.

Westwood co-owner Steven Leoni says the company plans to update the plaza, developing closer to the road, while modernizing the look of the existing building.

“Our goal is to make this a gateway to the west of campus,” Leoni says.

Tuesday’s hearing will be at the Frenchtown Renaissance Center at 6 p.m.
