Vacant, Charred Hotel To Be Demolished

Almost exactly four months after Tallahassee firefighters last quelled the flames of a hotel fire; the inn’s owner has decided to sign off on its demolition.

First responders were called to a fire at the same abandoned hotel close to Interstate 10 three times last February. Although the exact cause of the blazes remains unknown, fire officials originally theorized that since the motel’s utilities had already been shut off, the fire was most likely a result of vagrants trying to keep warm during a cold snap.

Now that the hotel’s owners have agreed to pull the boarding house, city crews began emptying the building and are expected to begin demolition in the coming days. The February fires also brought up questions about the city’s homeless who’ve lost shelter space after one facility closed and another relocated.
