South Florida isn’t the only part of the state with a vibrant Latin culture; the state’s capital is gearing up for an influx of Latin flavor this weekend. The first annual Latin Dance Festival is opening its three day event in Tallahassee Friday.

Latin dance and music is part of a broad variety of Latino culture that stretches from Central America to the Caribbean and includes genres like Salsa, Bachata and Merengue. Participants of the first ever Latin Dance Festival in Tallahassee will learn about all of those and more. Event organizer Miriam Watkins said the greatest lesson dancers will learn has less to do with learning numbers and more with making human connections.

“I think that’s so interesting and so wonderful about the principle of dance. I get healthy activity, I get a chance to meet all kinds of different people and there’s nothing that separates us we just have to know how to lead and follow. You know, so it makes life so much simpler,” Watkins explained.

The festival opens Friday and runs through Monday at the Tallahassee Civic Center and tickets can be purchased at the door.
