Every day after work, Rita Stevens, owner of the Early Years Child Development Center, goes to see her 86-year-old mother, who now resides in a nursing home. She’s also visits her mentally disabled daughter who is able to live independently with assistance.

Her care for family has earned her the Caregiver of the Year award for the Big Bend area, and Stevens says being named the regional Caregiver of the Year is a special recognition:

“It’s an honor to be recognized for something you should do anyway. But when you had an incredible mother like I had, you’re going to do it," she said.

The Caregiver of the Year Award is sponsored by the Academy of Florida Elder Law Attorneys. The award is given out to caregivers in different regions of the state.
