Tallahassee lost one of its most dedicated sports writers four years ago. Shortly after Steve Ellis passed away, Florida State University’s School of Communication set up a scholarship fund in his name. Now, the scholarship is close to reaching its funding goal and Ellis’ widow, Karen, is hoping a 5-k run in honor of her late husband will help them raise the remaining money.
Steve Ellis covered Florida State University sports for three decades and enjoyed mentoring aspiring writers. That’s why FSU’s School of Communications decided to set up a scholarship in his name. His widow Karen Ellis and friends have been working hard to reach their funding goal of $25,000; and now they’re only $3,000 away. Karen said raising the remaining $3,000 through a 5-k run was a no brainer, since her husband was an avid runner.
“Steve was a cross-country runner in high school, Winter Park High School, and they actually won two state championships while he was there and then he went to Clemson University for his degree and he actually started running cross country there,” Ellis mentioned.
She says her husband eventually quit running to focus on his journalism career. The Steve Ellis 5-K is this Saturday at the Florida State University Baseball Field. For more information, or to sign up, visit http://www.ellis5k.com/
