More moving trucks are on the road, now that it’s the start of the busy season for relocating. And a Florida movers’ association is launching a certification program to try and help people pick the most reliable movers and avoid getting scammed.
Despite Florida laws cracking down on moving fraud, scam artists are still using the internet and phone book to trap victims. That’s according to Corey Mathews, executive director of the Florida Movers and Warehousemen’s Association.
He said, the state can help protect consumers after the fact if they have complaints against a mover, but his group is going a step further.
“By our screening process, we’re adding an additional level of protection for consumers because we’re doing all of that background in the beginning, and we’re making sure that they’re reliable folks before you book your move,” he said.
His group awards the industry certification called ProMover based on background screenings and a minimum score from the Better Business Bureau.
Six Florida movers, including Tallahassee’s Browning company, have earned the ProMover certification so far.
