WFSU Reporters Take Home Statewide Awards

Lynn Hatter, Sascha Cordner and Jessica Palombo holding awards

WFSU-FM news reporters Sascha Cordner, Lynn Hatter and Jessica Palombo have won or were finalists for 2013 Florida Associated Press Broadcasters Awards.

The awards recognize outstanding radio and television contributions from stations across the state.

At the award ceremony in April, Sascha Cordner's report on "Bubble Boy" syndrome earned her the first-place award in the hard news feature category. In 2010, Sascha was a college finalist in the same category and for best short radio newscast. She currently hosts WFSU's "All Things Considered."

Reporter Lynn Hatter earned her first reporting honor for best light feature story. Her winning entry focused on the under-utilization of summer food programs for low-income children. Lynn is currently working in partnership with NPR and Kaiser Health News and has participated in NPR's Summer Learning Initiative.

Jessica Palombo's reporting on Tropical Storm Debby and the flooding in Florida's panhandle earned her a runner-up award for best weather reporting. In 2010, Jessica was recognized by the Syracuse Press Club for best feature reporting by a college student. Earlier this year, she was also a finalist in the journalism category at the Tallahassee Network of Young Professionals Golden ACE Awards.

Also honored for his work this year is WFSU-FM researcher Ryan Benk. Ryan, a senior at Florida State University, won the 2013 Best Broadcast Award from the FSU chapter of the Society of Collegiate Journalists. The honor was for a piece on military veterans featured in beer ads despite rising rates of alcoholism.
