This past fall the Leon High School marching band was surprised and elated to hear they had been chosen to march in London’s 2014 New Year’s Day parade. As you would imagine, the price of their trip costs more than a bus ride to a rival school’s football field.
Leon High School officials say the trip, of about 130 students and chaperons, costs anywhere from $350,000 to $400,00 for airfare, food and lodging. This Saturday band members are hosting a garage sale in front of Leon High from 8:00AM to 1:00PM, all benefiting the trip fund. Leon High Director of bands, Brett Pekuritz, says the band is making head way towards its goal.
“We’re basically about a quarter of the way there, but we still have a long way to go, but we need as much help as we can get from the community," said Pekuritz.
Pekuritz says if it rains the sale will be in front of the school’s gym. The Redcoats are also participating in the 2nd annual Leon Jazz Benefit Concert and Fundraiser, April 28 from 5 to 8PM, at the American Legion Hall, to raise some more funds.
