Friday night at the Leon County Civic Center, local officials will be dressed as pirates, chasing each other around and acting out an absurd story of mistaken identities. The Fifth Annual Readers Theater is a benefit for a volunteer group that teaches Leon County residents how to read.
Literacy Volunteers of Leon County is part of the county library system, but it depends on private donations to support its programs. The group gives one-on-one reading lessons to about 130 adults every week. It also provides workshops on things like FCAT preparation for parents of elementary school students.
For Friday’s fundraiser, county officials like Commissioner Kristin Dozier will appear in a staging of the farcical comedy “Jolly Roger King O the Pirates.”
Dozier said, “I think you’re just going to see a group of people that’s having a lot of fun, and really cares about Literacy Volunteers so much, and we’re proud to get on stage in some pirate outfits.”
Proceeds from ticket sales will go to buy things like GED training manuals, phonics books and computer software that teaches English to non-native speakers.
A small number of tickets are still available through the Literacy Volunteers website.
