Leon Superintendent Jackie Pons Wins Re-Election

Leon County School Superintendent Jackie Pons has been re-elected with more than 80 percent of the vote. Pons is the most popular local politician in the county, and as Lynn Hatter reports, high name recognition helped him coast to a victory over his challenger.

The race for Leon County School Superintendent was marked by online attacks between the campaigns waged largely out of the public eye. Incumbent Superintendent Jackie Pons refused to debate his challenger, Sabrina M. Allen, or even meet with her face-to-face. Allen had accused Pons of lying about his education and claiming he’s wasn’t qualified for the job. But Pons brushed off the campaign’s negativity as he celebrated the win:

“I just want to thank everyone that voted, even those that voted against me. Our community is a special community and I think we’re at 80 percent voting. It’s just a great day for education in Leon County.”

A Tallahassee Voices survey conducted a few months ago, listed Pons as the most popular local politician.
