The city of Tallahassee is in danger of losing one of its most successful half-way houses. Hope House Tallahassee owes more than 30 thousand dollars to the IRS as a result of faulty book-keeping.
The Hope House is a charity that focuses on the rehabilitation of ex-convicts. For more than 30 years the charity has helped people turn their lives around. It’s the only one in the area that’s committed to long term rehabilitation, even providing educational opportunities. Now Founder and Director, Danny Heaberlin, says because of an accounting error three years ago, the charity now owes the Federal Government 35,000 in back taxes.
“We started getting letters from the IRS that we owe this and owe that and owe this year 2007, 08, 09 and you know it ended up being right about 35,000 dollars.”
Heaberlin and the Hope House are asking Tallahassee residents for help in raising money to ensure the doors stay open.
