Election qualification period begins and ends this week

Several Leon County officials are currently running unopposed, including Leon County Property Appraiser Bert Hartsfield, Supervisor of Elections Ion Sancho and Clerk of Court Bob Inzer. Also without challengers right now are County Commissioners Jane Sauls and Bryan Desloge, and School Board members Dee Crumpler and Dee Dee Rasmussen. However, that could change by week's end.

Monday marked the start of qualifying week for candidates for federal, state, district and county hopefuls to public office to register with the state of Florida.  And, because it’s a redistricting year,  voters will have more seats to fill than usual in the fall.

Florida Department of State spokesman Chris Cate said registration is due by this Friday.

“The week of qualifying is that week when everything is finalized. By June 8, this Friday at noon, we’ll know all the candidates that are going to be on the ballot in the upcoming August primary.”

The positions up for grabs this year include all Congressional districts, including the two new ones created by redistricting, as well as all Florida Senate and Florida House seats. Almost 300 congressional and legislative candidates have gathered enough petition signatures to appear on this fall’s ballot, according to the state Division of Elections.
