The Department of Corrections is looking into an inmate death that happened over the weekend. That death resulted from an earlier beating at Santa Rosa Correctional Institution, a maximum security prison in north Florida. As Sascha Cordner reports, the case is under investigation by the department’s Inspector General as well as the State Attorney’s Office.
24-year-old Ricky Martin only had about a year left on his sentence, when his cellmate Shawn Rogers allegedly beat him to death on March 30th. As a result of Martin’s severe injuries, State Attorney William Eddins says Martin was placed on life support and died a week later. Eddins says his office is now looking into what charges to file against Rogers.
“We anticipate charges will be brought against Shawn Rogers for the homicide. The exact extent of the charges have not been determined at this time. We are considering whether or not to present the matter to a Grand Jury and seek a 1st degree murder indictment or whether or not to file lesser charges.”
Martin was in jail for burglary, grand theft, and trafficking stolen property. Rogers was already serving a life sentence in prison.
