Tallahassee, FL – About 40 Middle School students from Tallahassee attended the kickoff of a program to encourage students to read during the Summer on Monday. Sascha Cordner reports, Florida officials as well as the state's First Lady pledged to join in a Summer reading adventure along with students.

It's called the 2011 Summer Literacy Adventure, and First Lady Ann Scott hosted the event at the Governor's Mansion along with officials from the Department of Education to encourage the students to pledge. Scott recalled games and tools she used as a child.

"How many pages can I read in 15 minutes? How many pages could I read in an hour? I would also push myself in vocabulary; I would also push myself in vocabulary. I always kept a dictionary by me, reading books ahead of myself, but trying to increase my vocabulary at the same time."

At the end of Summer reading adventure, the school with the most participants would be recognized during the 2011-2012 school year with a special appearance from the First Lady.
