Tallahassee, FL – Voters opted for rules and regulation when it came to redistricting. Florida Public Radio's Trimmel Gomes reports voters backed two amendments that would set new rules for how legislative and congressional districts are drawn.

"This is a major step forward for the state of Florida."

Deirdre Macnab is the President of the League of Women voters of Florida. She says for years, there has been a problem of legislators both Republicans and Democrats, drawing their own districts and cutting communities into pieces to favor re-election.

"What Amendments 5 and 6 will do is set rules in the Constitution. Amendment 5 will guide for legislative redrawing, 6 will guide for congressional district redrawing and in the future politicians in Tallahassee will have to follow those rules."

The rules require districts to be compact, not favor or disfavor an incumbent or political party and follow the national voting rights laws to protect minority rights.
