Tallahassee, FL – Leon County Superintendent Jackie Pons made a surprise visit Monday to Deerlake Middle School and the classroom of Missy Atkinson. She has been named Leon County's new Teacher of the Year. Also on hand to celebrate were Deerlake Middle School Principal Shane Syfrett, members of the school board and Atkinson's family.
Missy Atkinson has been teaching science in Leon County for 22 years. She also worked at Godby High School. She loves watching children learn and loves science because it's a hands-on activity.
"When I teach, I try to involve the students in all senses. I tell them they've got to read it, they've got to see it, they've got to write it, they've got to do it, they've got to touch it. And I kind of live by that motto when I teach."
From here, Atkinson will represent Leon County for the state Teacher of the Year award. The winner will be chosen by the Department of Education.
