Tallahassee, FL – Rep. Ray Sansom, Republican from Destin, has submitted a letter of resignation to House Speaker Larry Cretul. It comes on the eve of a formal hearing in the House regarding alleged ethics violations. Sansom is facing criminal charges involving budget money that he steered to a Panhandle college, which in turn gave him a part-time job with a six-figure salary. He took the job the day he was sworn in as House Speaker.
Below is Sansom's resignation letter.
Dear Speaker Cretul:
It is with deep regret that I write this letter, but I feel the time has come to resign as State Representative for District 4. Let me state that this decision should not be received as an admission of any wrongdoing. On the contrary, I have steadfastly maintained that I am innocent of any wrongdoing and I will never relent from that position. However, based on many considerations and the advice of counsel, I have decided that it is in the best interest of me and my family to resign at this time from the House of Representatives.
I want to thank all of the people who have supported me in my political career as well as supported me and my family. I can assure all concerned that the time will come where I will be afforded an opportunity to fully answer all questions and I anxiously await an opportunity to do so.
I would respectfully request you maintain the District 4 office, staffed with a Legislative Aide and District Secretary. These positions are currently held by Samantha Sullivan and Dort Baltes. We wish to maintain serving our constituents in the community until such time as a Special Election or interim appointment can be made to finish the current term.
In closing, upon the advice of counsel and based upon my love for the Florida House, I hereby resign effective this date.
Sincerely,
Raymond E. Sansom
