National Night Out

Does racial diversity play an important role in law enforcement? Some local officials say it does. The two white and two black candidates in the Leon County Sheriff’s race have their own views about how law enforcement diversity is key to helping strengthen ties with the community.

A nationwide event aimed at promoting crime and drug prevention awareness will have a much bigger presence in the Tallahassee community this year. The Tallahassee Police Department is partnering with Target to host its version of “National Night Out” Tuesday at Cascades Park.

Every year since the early mid-1980s, “National Night Out” is celebrated on the first Tuesday in August. It was started by the National Association of Town Watch. In the past, TPD Community Relations Supervisor Sgt. Artemus Shepherd says they commemorated the day by assisting locals with own events.
