The Florida Department of Health on Wednesday released guidance that said treatment such as puberty-blocking medication and hormone therapy should not be used for transgender youths, clashing with federal officials over the issue.

A faculty committee charged with looking into how the University of Florida hired Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo found “numerous irregularities” that raised concerns. Ladapo was quickly hired to a tenured position at the university in addition to his duties at the Florida Department of Health.

Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo received confirmation from the full Senate Wednesday. Ladapo, who was appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis has faced controversy because of his stance on vaccines and masking throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Only a few states have a surgeon general. Florida has had one since 2007, but critics say the job serving as the top advocate for wellness and disease prevention has changed because of state politics.

Democrats are urging the Florida Senate to reject Joseph Ladapo’s appointment as State Surgeon General. Ladapo was appointed to the job last month. He replaced Scott Rivkees, who resigned. But since coming on board—Ladapo's positions on issues like vaccines and mask mandates have riled Democrats. And a run-in with a Democratic state senator earned a rebuke from the Senate’s top Republican.
