Flock cameras

Reactions are mixed after state leaders announced Flock camera license plate readers would be removed from state highways.

There is talk from several of the law enforcement agencies pausing their use for the Florida legislature and other groups to enact regulations before bringing the surveillance technology back into use.

Sheriff's offices throughout the Panhandle say they plan to stop Flock camera use after a memo from Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Department of Transportation banning the license plate readers on state highways and in the right-of-way of state roads.

Flock cameras are automated license plate reader systems made by the company Flock Safety. They record and log details of passing vehicles on public roads. Right now, 116 of the cameras are in operation around Leon County.
