Florida legislative leaders have finally set a date for hammering out their budget details

In a joint memo, leadership in the House and Senate announced it is scheduled for May 12 - 29.

As part of the announcement, they also revealed the tentative allocation for the state’s general fund will come in at a little less than $52 billion.

That’s almost halfway between the two chambers’ initial proposals. Now the two sides must work to agree on which priorities to fund.

A special session is needed because lawmakers were unable to resolve the issue during the legislature's regular 60-day session. This is the second year in a row that’s happened.

Passing a balanced budget is the only thing state lawmakers are legally required to do each year, with a deadline of July 1.
